learn to knit

from $42.00

if you’re interested in knitting, you’ve come to the right place! complete beginners and folks looking to freshen their skills are invited to join us at our cozy studio in kansas city, missouri, for an introduction to basic knitting skills.

please note! if you can confidently cast on, knit, purl and cast off, you’re ready to move on to our intermediate & advanced projects! you can learn more about our knitting skills levels here.

the beginner class is offered in two formats to meet you where you are and give you the foundation you need to knit with confidence:

  • three-part course – a guided journey where you’ll craft your own set of wooden knitting needles on the first day. the curriculum is as follows:

    • class one: make your knitting needles + learn to cast on

    • class two: practice cast on + knit stitch + reading a simple pattern

    • class three: knit stitch review + casting off (optional: purl stitch introduction)

  • drop-in sessions – if you drop in for just one session, we’ll focus on whatever skill is right for you that day. not sure? our instructors will guide you toward the technique that you’re ready for.

you can take this class as many times as you’d like! we understand that everyone learns at their own pace. some students may feel ready to move on after 2–3 classes, while others return for more practice and inspiration.

  • instructor: lauren vossen

  • projects: scarf, pouch, hand warmers, toy ball, or stuffed animal (cat)

  • skill level: absolute beginners and those with a bit of experience. you can read more about how we determine our knitting skills levels.

  • required experience: none! just a willingness to learn.

  • ages: all ages 10+ are welcome. (if you’re looking for youth classes ages 6-12, you can find those here)

  • required supplies:

    • yarn – worsted or bulky weight is best for beginners. leraning with wool is ideal—for its simplicity, sustainability, and feel—but organic cotton is a good plant-based choice. we do not recommend acrylic yarns.

    • needles – US 8 (5mm) is a great starter size. for bulky yarn, you could go up to US 10.5 (6.5mm). wooden needles are recommended! they are gentler in hand and less slippery than metal.

you can shop at maypop! if you’re picking out materials at the shop, please arrive 15–20 minutes early for your class to choose materials or bring your own from the list above.

cancellation policy

classes require a minimum of three students. an emailed notification of cancellation will be sent at least two days before the class if the minimum is not met. In case of the shop cancellation, all registered students will be refunded the class fee. student cancellations or no-shows can not be refunded.
