open studio
a place to create and connect
open studio at maypop exists to support connection in many forms ~ to materials, to others, and to the parts of ourselves that wake up when we create. these hours are intentionally unstructured, offering space for curiosity, experimentation and creative wandering.
open studio is not just for artists or people with a defined practice. it’s for anyone who feels drawn to working with their hands or spending time in a creative environment. you might come with a plan, or you might come with nothing at all and see what emerges.
there is no expectation of productivity or perfection here. creativity is a human capacity, not a skill to be earned or learned. the focus is on process and presence.
adult open studio
consider this your invitation to gather, work, and create alongside other curious, creative humans. this is unstructured studio time. come to tend an ongoing project, try a new material, or simply enjoy making in a shared space.
you’re welcome to bring your own materials or explore what’s available in the studio. this time is about presence, rhythm, and creative companionship rather than instruction or outcomes.
family open studio
in this relaxed, creative environment designed for families and mixed-age groups, folks can explore materials together.
bring your own craft or explore a rotating selection of supplies chosen to invite imagination, experimentation, and collaboration.
this is self-guided studio time. a studio attendant is present to support the space, but families are encouraged to lead their own creative flow—following interests, making side-by-side, and letting ideas unfold naturally.
materials may include textiles, beads, drawing tools, cardboard, clay, recycled materials, stamps, stickers, and more. because small or complex materials may be present, caregivers are responsible for guiding children toward age-appropriate options.
preschool open studio
a calm, welcoming space for young children and their caregivers to gather in community and explore materials together at their own pace. each week, a curated set of materials is offered for open-ended, process-based exploration. no instructions, no pressure, no “right way” to make.
rather than working toward a finished product, children are invited to follow their curiosity, test ideas, and build creative confidence through hands-on play. this is often called process art: honoring the experience of making over the outcome.
caregivers are expected to stay and create with their children, but a studio facilitator is present to support the space, offer gentle suggestions, and help describe how materials might be used.
