knitting: what skill level am i?

at maypop, we welcome knitters at every stage. knowing your skill level helps you find the right class, pattern, or project so you can enjoy the process and build confidence as you go.

  • level one: beginner

    you’re brand new or still practicing the basics.

    • cast on (long-tail, backwards loop, knit-on)

    • knit stitch

    • joining a new ball of yarn

    • binding off and weaving in ends

    • simple seams (whip stitch)

  • level two: intermediate

    you know the basics and are ready to learn more.

    • purl stitch

    • ribbing – knit/purl

    • increase (kfb, yo) and decrease (k2tog, ssk)

    • knit in the round (circulars or DPNs)

    • seaming (mattress stitch and three-needle bind-off)

    • pick up stitches

    • understand gauge

    • fixing simple mistakes

  • level three: advanced

    you’re comfortable with many techniques and want more complexity.

    • work shaping (M1, lifted increase, psso, center double decrease)

    • knit small circumferences (magic loop, DPNs)

    • fix common mistakes

    • seaming (kitchener stitch)

    • knit brioche and cables

    • work colorwork or stranded knitting
